The Butterfly Effect Founder, Cari A. Harris, recognized at December 2 ceremony
This year has been one defined by growth — personal, professional, and transformational. And one of the most meaningful milestones came on December 2nd, when our founder and principal consultant, Cari A. Harris, graduated from the Leadership Maryland Emerging Leader Program, joining a statewide network of more than 1,600 leaders dedicated to shaping Maryland’s future.
Leadership Maryland’s Emerging Leader Program is known for identifying rising changemakers across business, government, nonprofit, and education sectors. Out of hundreds of candidates statewide, only 37 individuals were selected for this year’s six-month cohort — an intensive journey of personal discovery, state-level insight, and deep leadership development.
For Cari, the experience was more than a program. It was a mirror, a challenge, and a catalyst.
A Six-Month Journey of Deep Reflection and Higher Standards
Each month, the cohort gathered for day-long sessions led by facilitators, guest speakers, and civic leaders whose work drives Maryland’s most critical solutions. From economic development and education to public health, climate resilience, and equity, the program created space for emerging leaders to learn not just about Maryland’s challenges — but to understand their own leadership identity within them.
Cari describes the experience this way:
“Leadership Maryland gave me language for things I’ve always intuitively understood — that leadership is as much about self-awareness as it is about strategy, as much about listening as directing. It was humbling and affirming at the same time.”
The program emphasized becoming more adaptive, inclusive, strategic, and impactful — core values that mirror the philosophy behind The Butterfly Effect’s work across economic development, organizational systems, community engagement, and environmental justice.
A Milestone for TBE — and for Maryland’s Leadership Landscape
Leadership Maryland’s president and CEO, David Fike, celebrated this year’s class for their dedication and the role they will continue to play in shaping Maryland’s future:
“The graduates...have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth, and I am confident they will continue to drive meaningful change in their communities and across Maryland.”—David Fike ’16 (LM), President & CEO, Leadership Maryland
To be recognized in this way — alongside brilliant leaders from across the state — is both an honor and a responsibility. For Cari, this graduation marks a new chapter in how The Butterfly Effect will continue partnering with organizations working at the intersection of community, economic development and sustainability.
Why Leadership Maryland Matters for TBE’s Work
The Butterfly Effect is a firm built on clarity, capacity, and community impact. Every engagement we take on — whether restructuring a company’s operations, designing a strategic engagement strategy, or strengthening a regional small-business ecosystem — asks us to lead with integrity, rigor, and deep awareness of the systems we operate within.
Leadership Maryland sharpened those muscles.
The program provided:
A statewide perspective on systemic, regional challenges
A cross-sector cohort that mirrors TBE’s own interdisciplinary work
Tools for more adaptive and inclusive leadership
A network of leaders whose collaboration will shape Maryland for decades
This experience enriches every part of TBE’s approach — and affirms the importance of the work our team does across the state.
Stepping Into 2026 with Purpose
Graduation was not an ending. It was a threshold.
Cari now joins Leadership Maryland’s influential alumni network — a collective force of change-makers working to build a better Maryland. And as The Butterfly Effect looks toward the year ahead, this milestone strengthens our commitment to building systems, strategies, and solutions that uplift communities across Baltimore and beyond.
We can’t wait to translate this growth into even greater impact for our partners and for communities.
